i just took this quiz on facebook, 'how original were your parents in naming you?' and it gave me this idea to look up what you might be named today.

here is the link: http://apps.facebook.com/parentoriginality/

here is how it works... if you arent on facebook or cant, or dont want to, take this quiz, you can find out the rank of your name in the year you were born on the social security website. find your ranking and then find what name is at the same ranking on the most current listings (which i assume is still 2008 at this point) post your results and what you think of that name.

anyway, here are my results from the quiz:

Carrie's parents get a C- for originality.
Ranking: 'Carrie' was the 55th most popular girl's name in her birth year.
Rarity: 60% of girls had rarer names that year. (Grade: C-)
Peak year: 'Carrie' peaked in popularity in 1977.
Current rank: 'Carrie' isn't currently one of the top 1000 girl's names.
Current name: Carrie's parents might name her 'Layla' today (current #55).

(personally, not a fan of layla, and dont look at all like what i picture a layla to be)

A girl who graduated two years behind me had a daughter... Mersadeez.
I seriously said "WHAT THE HELL?" out loud. This girl and I grew up in a rural, farming community, by the way. I know that name reads like a stereotypical inner city type name.

The 'Allah' debacle and the decision by the High Court to grant Christian usage of 'Allah' has sparked protests and outrage among several Muslim NGOs. The issue has been a front page subject on online news portals for several days, an unusual situation in Malaysia.

Yesterday, there was some debate about the Federal government's decision to allow these groups to organize protests nationwide. Today, two churches have been arsoned.

The Metro Tabernacle Church, an Assemblies of God church in the suburb of Melawati, Kuala Lumpur, was torched last night at midnight. Here is the news report.

This morning, the Assumption Church in the suburb of Petaling Jaya, a Catholic church, was firebombed. No damage happened because the bombs did not explode. Here is the news report.

Edit: Several days ago, the judiciary website was defaced by a hacker threatening Christians in the country. This morning, very shortly after news of the arsons, the Vice-President of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party publicly condemned the attacks.

Some local political perspective )

Please continue praying for us. Please pray that the violence is contained, and that Christians in Malaysia do not act rashly.

Fans of loopy banter and insane violence rejoice — Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, of Zombieland fame, are writing the Deadpool movie. This means the "Merc with a Mouth" film could actually be clever.

Variety announced that Fox has selected Zombieland writers Reese and Wernick to bring Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool film to life.

While there's "no timetable" set the trade speculates that if the script is done by the summer, Reynolds will already be in superhero shape from filming Green Lantern and has a window of opportunity, so what's to stop a quick turnover? Well besides piling two Ryan Reynolds comic book movie releases on top of each other that is.

The writers stated that they wanted to stay true to the mythology of Deadpool, and if their previous Zombieland work is any indication of their wit, then they are a perfect fit for the fourth-wall-breaking, Bea Arthur-loving character.

The mystery behind troubled comic Artie Lange's recent hospital stay may be more serious than expected.

Howard Stern's sharp-tongued sidekick was reportedly rushed to a New Jersey hospital on Saturday, the comedian's rep confirmed to TMZ.com, adding Lange "has chosen to keep all information on this matter between him and his doctor."

However, not all of Lange's skeletons have been kept in the closet.

Lange's hospitalization reportedly occurred after the comedian stabbed himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, The Post reports.

According to a law-enforcement source, Lange's mother called 911 after entering his Hoboken apartment and finding the blood-stained comedian Saturday morning.

Lange's mother reportedly came to visit him to drop off food when she discovered her injured son, who sustained six "hesitation wounds" and three deep plunges.

Despite heavy bleeding from the incident, surgeons managed to save Lange's life.

Earlier in the week, Stern spoke out about his ailing friend, however wouldn't reveal the reason for Lange's emergency.

"We all have our demons," said Stern, referring to Lange's past battles with addiction. "Artie has given this show tremendous moments of great comedy. He's a tremendous contributor. He is a good man. Don't forget how great he is."

Stern, who has hosted the controversial radio program, "The Howard Stern Show," on Sirius XM radio since January 2006, also denied that Lange was quitting the show and being replaced by Jim Breuer.

Lange, 41, had been mysteriously absent from the radio talk show in the days prior to the company's holiday break.

Get ready for another season of Simon and Paula’s signature bickering — on the US adaptation of The X Factor.

Paula Abdul has allegedly inked a $4.5 million contract to bring her loopy commentary to the judges panel on an American version of Simon’s hit UK talent show, The X Factor. That’s interesting, considering the star walked away from her post at American Idol because she failed to secure the $10 million-a-year payday she was vying for.

Apparently, Paula isn’t very good at gambling, is she?

A FOX tipster revealed to The National Enquirer’s Mike Walker: “Simon flew Paula to London and wined and dined her relentlessly over the course of several days, even introducing her to everyone who works on X Factor. But what really clinched the deal was Simon’s pledge that she wouldn’t have to deal with all the nonsense and infighting that she hated on Idol.”

The X Factor America will premiere in 2011.

On The Jay Leno Show tonight, Jay Leno made a few jokes, mostly at NBC’s expense, in response to rumors that the network would be canceling his talk show after a bout of low ratings. While I’m not normally a fan of Leno, as I believe he’s too much of a kiss ass and the definition of “safe” comedy, tonight he was in rare form. (LOL OK, SOURCE)

In the Woods (2007)
Written by: Tana French
Genre: Mystery
Pages: 429 (Trade Paperback)

The premise: ganked from BN.com, because I'm seriously lazy. ;) As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.

Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a twelve-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox—his partner and closest friend—find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery. Now, with only snippets of long-buried memories to guide him, Ryan has the chance to uncover both the mystery of the case before him and that of his own shadowy past.

My Rating

Worth the Cash: Actually, it almost feels like a "Keeper Shelf." I really, really enjoyed this book. Especially the characters, and I enjoyed it so much that I was tempted to get the sequel written in Cassie's POV before I ever finished reading In the Woods. I held myself back because I knew some people were really unhappy with the way In the Woods ended and I didn't want to end up as one of those people but with the sequel on my hands. That said, I could've bought the sequel and been perfectly happy. This book haunted me, folks. Its ending and resolution is such that after I finished the book, I dreamed about it, my brain making a desperate effort to understand everything and to give me a kind of extended ending. That's kind of cool and kind of creepy, but I was very satisfied with the ending, even though it doesn't wrap the book up in a nice, pretty bow. The ending isn't for readers looking for escapism, or readers who want to see order and justice in every pocket of the world. It's not to say it isn't there on some level, but this book should disturb you on a certain level, for what it says about humanity and its unsolved mysteries. It's a good book with excellent characterization, and I really felt for these guys and wished to hell certain things hadn't happened in the book that were perfectly inevitable. Oh, how it broke my heart. But oh, how satisfying this was. I look forward to French's next book featuring Cassie, which is called The Likeness.

Review style: spoilers, so beware. While reading this I had no desire to flip to the end to spoil myself, and I'm glad for it. So if you have any interest in this book, don't click the link below. It's a MYSTERY for goodness's sakes: why spoil the mystery for yourself?

If you've read it and want to discuss it, feel free to read the full review at my LJ. As always, comments and discussion are most welcome. :)

Can anyone direct me to a site or instructions on making no slip hair clips? I'd like to make some for my daughters, but everything I'm coming across is books/DVDs you have to purchase or instructions that aren't very detailed or don't include pictures. TIA!
